Concert rescheduled to Spring 2021!
State Choir LATVIJA
Conductor Tõnu Kaljuste
Programme: Ludwig van Beethoven MISSA SOLEMNIS in D major, Op. 123
“From the heart – may it return to the heart!” wrote Ludwig van Beethoven on the score of Missa solemnis. These farewell words by the composer is the key to the incredible, awe-inspiring profundity emanating from this monumental opus. It breaks out of the liturgical confines with a torrential force, washing away the words and notions of the conventional descriptions of music.
Some believe that Missa solemnis elevated Beethoven to the level of the great masters of Baroque and Renaissance or that in it he soared above even the likes of Bach and Palestrina. As the year of Beethoven’s 250th anniversary comes to close, the great Estonian maestro and skilled weaver of grand musical fabrics, Tõnu Kaljuste, will unroll the exquisite threads of the mass at the Great Guild Hall. He will be assisted in this truly grandiose undertaking by excellent companions, including the State Choir Latvija, the dream collective for performance of Beethoven’s larger-scale works.
