CULTURE (SUR)VIVES

CULTURE (SUR)VIVES

In November, representatives of the cultural sector will unite to draw the attention of the public and decision-makers to the inadequate funding of the cultural sector and the growing crisis in the remuneration of cultural workers.

Although culture is an essential societal value, public funding for museums, libraries and performing arts organisations decreases year on year. Particularly alarming is the situation regarding remuneration, which is increasingly prompting professionals in the sector to leave their workplaces or seek career opportunities elsewhere in Europe. Among them are museum collection and research specialists, professional musicians, dancers, actors, stage technicians and many other cultural sector professionals.

On 10 November at 19:00, the Riga Congress House will host the “Culture (Sur)vives” concert, featuring predominantly music by Latvian composers — classical works — bringing together Latvia’s professional music ensembles and their artistic directors:

State Choir LATVIJA
Latvian Radio Big Band
Orchestra RIGA
Liepāja Symphony Orchestra
LNSO / Latvian National Symphony Orchestra
Latvian National Opera and Ballet — soloists, orchestra and choir
Kremerata Baltica Chamber Orchestra — ensemble of musicians
State Chamber Orchestra Sinfonietta Rīga

The concert is organised by the association “Laiks kultūrai” and the Latvian Association of Professional Music Ensembles, which unites the country’s leading symphonic and chamber orchestras, the State Academic Choir “Latvija”, the Latvian National Opera and Ballet, the Latvian Radio Big Band, as well as the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music.

Admission to the concert is by invitation, with voluntary donations welcome. Invitations can be obtained at bilesuparadize.lv and at Biļešu Paradīze box offices.
